Living what is good from inside a culture of evil

"do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit". (Eph 5:18)

As we've seen in our previous conversations, we live in a broken world:

1. Humanity has chosen to discern good and evil for itself (it didn’t want to learn from God but to be equal to God).
2. All human production (science, culture, society, etc.) now struggles to prove itself right and maintain its own kingdom.
3. The world’s development model is Oppression, Violence, and War (the levels of this method may vary, but they are always present).

We have also seen that the model of the Kingdom of God is completely opposite to this system of our world; its principle is Justice, Mercy, and Peace. And Jesus preached the arrival of the kingdom of God first within us; he said: "The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed… the kingdom of God is in the midst of you" (Luke 17:20-21).

However, as members of the human race, we already had the world's system within us, innately. Choosing to discern good and evil for ourselves rather than accepting the discernment that comes from God has imprinted in all of us a tendency toward evil. On autopilot, we all build Towers of Babel.

Beyond Our Horizon

Pentecost is a new beginning in the right way! Let's remember that to prevent the construction of Babel, or Babylon, as it came to be called after it was finally built, God caused the difference in language to create misunderstanding and separation (he delayed the inevitable). The Tower of Babel was not just a construction, but something that is within the human heart. Look around and you will see that Towers of Babel continue to be built everywhere and at all times.

Now, in the fullness of time, God begins to remake all things. Jesus himself said, "Behold, I am making all things new" (Revelation 21:5). Beginning with forgiveness and redemption through his death and resurrection and followed by the arrival of the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, the reign of Evil was destroyed completely. Everything is done, but we, from within this broken world, perceive the effect of everything in "slow motion".

Look back in time how everything was undone

People had a spirit and a heart for Evil; God confuses the people's languages; He separates them into ethnic groups; each ethnic group builds its own Babel; each Babel fights against another with Oppression, Violence, and War... JESUS ​​GIVES HIMSELF TO OUR RESCUE ...The Holy Spirit is sent into people, reforming their spirits and giving them a new heart for the Good; He establishes a new language in them that communicates the greatness of God; He invites everybody into a new ethnic group created in Christ; these new people (children of God) are united around Christ and His kingdom; they begin to preach the Gospel of the Kingdom of God with Justice, Mercy, and Peace.

Now, we must never forget that we continue to live in a broken world... Among the worst mistakes of the people of Israel is their failure to discern the face of Evil within their own culture and the development of their religion; they became proud and oppressive and were swallowed up by the same world system, transforming their crystallized faith into another version of the Tower of Babel.

Just to talk about ourselves

When we look at the way the early church lived, isn't it true that the further we distance ourselves from the Pentecost effect, the more dissonant we live from what the Holy Spirit began? Without mentioning miracles or completely out-of-the-ordinary things, but simply considering the unity, love, and dedication (life testimony) that were visible to everyone at the time, isn't it clear that we've walked backward rather than forward?

"Do not get drunk with wine" means much more than just drinking too much (although this can also be a problem, and certainly was for the Apostle Paul's audience). What this means is that when we become intoxicated by anything, we surrender control of our senses to it, leaving our perception corrupted and our judgment impaired. Instead, we must be filled with the Holy Spirit.

In other words, we must allow ourselves to be "controlled" by His influence. Wasn't this blessed influence what reversed the Babel effect? Well, without this influence, we are slowly swept away by the current of this broken world and, inevitably, return to building towers and enjoying Babylon.

We must always revisit the Pentecost effect. Not to seek miracles, but to seek the same influence of the Spirit. Beginning with our language, the Spirit of God highlights in us the marks of the Kingdom of God. What happened that day to those gathered in Jerusalem was the same thing as Paul describes in Ephesians 5:18-2. It was the language of Heaven spoken by the inhabitants of the earth:

• Talking to each other about what the Bible says
• Singing praises from the heart
• Always being thankful to God
• Walking in humility with one another

Living under the holy influence

Our existence on earth is mediated by our body, but the body (which navigates through the senses) is not everything in our existence. We also have an immaterial part called the soul, which expresses itself in the body through the mind and heart (immaterial sense, not the functioning of the brain and physical heart). We also have a human spirit, given by God and sustained by Him, but which has been corrupted by sin. Everything must be under holy influence (done in the name of Jesus).

The engineering of communion with God

What the Bible identifies as walking in the flesh is walking only by the human senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste). If all we have to guide us are our senses, then we must nourish, satisfy, and serve only them. Please, don't misunderstand it. We need our senses (they are good and useful), but they are not enough for us to have the life of God within us. Those who are guided only by what they perceive with their senses will never have enough faith for anything, and "without faith it is impossible to please God" (Heb. 15:6). The Bible also says that human beings do not live by what they eat and drink alone (Matthew 4:4); if we nourish only the machinery of our body, we will not have spiritual life.

Furthermore, because of the influence of sin, our senses prefer to be gratified by what is harmful rather than by what is good. It doesn't even take much spiritualization to see that this happens; just think about diet and exercise, and we'll quickly see how it works. What we need is to use our human senses to nourish ourselves in divine ways.

While teaching, Jesus often said things like, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear"; in other words, use your ears to move your faith. Jesus also said that "the eye is the lamp of the body" (Matthew 6:22-23), but his connotation was entirely spiritual.

We have a soul that relates to our mind (thoughts, will, conscience) and to our heart (feelings, motivations, intentions). This doesn't just mean that if we have a bad soul, we will only think evil thoughts or have only bad feelings, but rather that we can rebuild or restore our soul through what enters our mind and heart (Psalm 19:7).

The human spirit was given by God to humankind so that, unlike animals, human beings could relate to God in a proper way. Before sin, men and women had a pure and perfect spirit placed within them precisely for this purpose. However, when they sinned by rejecting God and preferring to serve themselves (defining what is good and what is evil for themselves), they suffered a massive spiritual heart attack. Thanks to Jesus, we have been forgiven and redeemed, but our spirits can only be reformed through the action of the Holy Spirit. This is precisely why the Holy Spirit came to dwell within us. He didn't come to coerce our will or force us to do what we don't want, but rather to reform our spirits so that we can desire to be who we were created to be.

Starting our spiritual engine

When we pray, we are actually training our senses to perceive God's presence, which would otherwise be lost. When we fast, we make our bodies understand that we are governed not only by our bodily senses, but we subjugate them to our spirituality.

When we study the Bible, seeking not only knowledge but actually using our senses and spiritual faculties so that God's Word becomes alive within us; when we seek to hear him speak to us in specific ways, to get to know him, to let him teach us how to worship him: He responds, and His word transforms us, transforms our understanding and our lives.

When we seek God, He draws near to us. When we call upon the Holy Spirit and ask for His full influence within us, asking Him to lead us to practice what Paul teaches in Ephesians 5, we are beginning something tremendously powerful, which not even the powers of hell can resist.

Vivendo o Bem mesmo dentro de uma realidade governada pelo Mal

“não vos embriagueis com vinho, no qual há dissolução, mas enchei-vos do Espírito”. (Eph 5:18)

Como já vimos em nossas conversas anteriores vivemos em um mundo quebrado:

• A humanidade escolheu discernir o bem e o mal por sim mesma (quis ser igual a Deus).
• Toda produção humana (ciência, cultura, sociedade, etc.) agora luta para provar-se correta e manter seu próprio reino.
• O modelo de desenvolvimento do sistema do mundo é Opressão, Violência e Guerra (os níveis deste método podem variar, mas estão sempre presentes).

            Vimos também que o modelo do Reino de Deus é completamente oposto a esse sistema do nosso mundo; seu princípio é Justiça, Misericórdia e Paz. E Jesus pregou a chegada do reino de Deus primeiro dentro de nós; ele disse: “Não vem o reino de Deus com visível aparência... Porque o reino de Deus está dentro de vós” (Luk 17:20-21).

Contudo, como membros da raça humana já tínhamos o sistema do mundo dentro de nós de forma congênita. A escolha de por si mesmos discernir o bem e o mal ao invés de aceitar o discernimento que vem de Deus, imprimiu em todos nós a tendência para o mal. No piloto automático todos nós construímos Torres de Babel.

Para além do nosso horizonte

Pentecostes é um recomeço no modelo certo! Vamos lembrar que para impedir a construção de Babel, ou Babilônia, como veio a ser chamada depois de finalmente construída, Deus fez com que a diferença de linguagem criasse desentendimento e separação (protelou o inevitável). A Torre de Babel não era apenas uma construção, mas é algo que está dentro do coração humano. Olhe ao redor e você verá que Torres de Babel continuam sendo construídas em todos os lugares em todo tempo.

Agora na plenitude do tempo, Deus começa a refazer todas as coisas. Jesus mesmo disse: “Eis que faço novas todas coisas” (Rev 21:5). Começando com o perdão e redenção através de sua morte e ressurreição e seguindo com chegada do Espírito Santo para habitar dentro de nós o reinado do Mal através da morte é destruído. Tudo está feito, porém nós, de dentro desse mundo quebrado, percebemos o efeito de tudo em “câmera lenta”.

Veja o tempo voltar

As pessoas têm um espírito e um coração para o Mal; Deus confunde as línguas do povo; separa-os em etnias; cada etnia constrói sua própria babel; cada babel luta contra outra com Opressão, Violência e Guerra...  Jesus se dá em nosso resgate ...O Espírito Santo é enviado para dentro das pessoas reformando seu espírito e dando um novo coração para o Bem; estabelece uma nova língua que comunica as grandezas de Deus; uma nova etnia em cristo é criada; esse novo povo (filhos de Deus) se unem em torno de Cristo e seu reino; passam a pregar o Evangelho do Reino de Deus com Justiça, Misericórdia e Paz.

Agora, nuca devemos esquecer que continuamos dentro de um mundo quebrado... Dentre os piores erros do povo de Israel está o fato de não terem discernido a face do Mal dentro de sua própria cultura e desenvolvimento de sua religião; tornaram-se orgulhosos e opressores e foram engolidos pelo mesmo sistema do mundo, transformando sua fé cristalizada em mais uma versão de Torre de Babel.

Para falarmos de nós mesmos

Quando olhamos para a forma como vivia a igreja primitiva, não é verdade que quanto mais nos distanciamos do efeito Pentecostes, vivemos em maior dissonância do que o Espírito Santo começou? Sem falar de milagres ou coisas totalmente fora da curva, mas pensado apenas na união, amor e dedicação (testemunho de vida) que ficou visível a todo mundo da época, não fica patente que regredimos ao invés de avançar?

“Não vos embriagueis com vinho” quer dizer mais do que beber além da conta (apesar de isso também poder ser um problema, e certamente o era para audiência do Apóstolo Paulo). Isso quer dizer que quando ficamos inebriados por qualquer coisa entregamos a ela o controle dos nossos sentidos, ficamos com nossa percepção corrompida e nosso julgamento comprometido. Ao invés disso devemos nos encher do Espírito Santo.

Em outras palavras devemos nos deixar “controlar” pela Sua influência. Não foi essa influência bendita que inverteu o efeito Babel? Pois é... Sem essa influência somos vagarosamente arrastados pelo fluxo desse mundo quebrado e, inevitavelmente, voltamos a construir torres e gostar da Babilônia.

Devemos sempre revisitar o efeito Pentecostes. Não para buscar milagres, mas par buscar a mesma influência do Espírito. A começar com a nossa linguagem, o Espírito de Deus ressalta em nós as marcas do Reino de Deus. O que ocorreu naquele dia com os que estavam reunidos em Jerusalém, foi o mesmo que Paulo descreveu em Efésios 5:18-2. E a linguagem do Céu nos habitantes da terra:

• Falando entre nós sobre o que diz a Bíblia
• Entoando louvores de coração
• Estando sempre agradecido a Deus
• Andando em humildade um com o outro

Vivendo sob santa influência

A nossa existência na terra e mediada pelo nosso corpo, contudo o corpo (que navega através dos sentidos) não é tudo na nossa exis-tência. Também temos uma parte imaterial que se chama alma e que se expressa no corpo através da mente e do coração (sentido imate-rial e não o funcionamento dos órgãos cérebro e coração). Também temos um espírito humano dado por Deus e por ele sustentado, mas que foi corrompido pelo pecado. Tudo deve estar sob santa influência (feito no nome de Jesus).      

A engenharia da comunhão com Deus

O que a Bíblia identifica como andar na carne, é andar apenas pelos sentidos humanos (visão, audição, tato, olfato e paladar). Se tudo o que temos para nos guiar são os sentidos então a eles teremos que nutrir, satisfazer e servir. Não entenda mal, nós precisamos dos nossos sentidos (eles são bons e uteis), mas não são suficientes para que tenhamos a vida de Deus em nós. Quem se orienta só pelo que pode perceber com os sentidos nunca terá fé suficiente para nada e “sem fé é impossível agradar a Deus” (Heb 15:6). A bíblia também diz que o ser humano não vive só do que come e bebe (Mat 4:4); se nutrirmos apenas o maquinário do nosso corpo não teremos vida espiritual.

Além do mais, por causa da influência do pecado nossos sentidos preferem mais ser gratificados com o que faz mal do que com o que faz bem. Não é nem preciso espiritualizar de mais para ver que isso ocorre, basta pensar em dieta e exercícios que a gente logo vê como isso funciona.

O que precisamos é usar os sentidos humanos para nutrir-nos também de formas divinas. Jesus enquanto ensinava várias vezes dizia coisas como “quem tem ouvidos para ouvir ouça”; em outras palavras, use seus ouvidos para movimentar a sua a fé. Jesus também falou que “os olhos são a lâmpada do corpo” (Mat 6:22-23), mas a sua conotação foi completamente espiritual.

Nos temos uma alma que se relaciona com a nossa mente (pensamentos, vontade, consciência) e o nosso coração (sentimentos, motivações, intenções). Isso não quer dizer apenas que se temos uma alma má, só pensaremos em maldades ou só teremos sentimentos ruins, mas que podemos reconstruir ou restaurar a nossa alma através do que entra na nossa mente e no nosso coração (Psa 19:7).

O espírito humano foi dado por Deus aos homens para que, diferente dos animais, o ser humano pudesse relacionar-se com Deus de forma idônea. Antes de pecar homem e mulher tinham um espírito puro e perfeito colocado neles justamente para isso. Porém, quando eles pecaram rejeitando a Deus e preferindo servir a si mesmos (definindo sozinhos o que é bom e o que é mal) eles tiveram um infarto espiritual fulminante. Graças a Jesus fomos perdoados e redimidos, mas nosso espírito somente pode ser reformado através da ação do Espírito Santo. É por isso mesmo que o Espírito Santo veio habitar em nós. Ele não veio coagir a nossa vontade e nem nos obrigar a fazer o que não queremos, mas sim veio reformar o nosso espírito para que possamos querer ser o que fomos criados para ser.

Dando partida no nosso motor espiritual

Quando oramos estamos na verdade treinando os nossos sentidos para perceber a presença de Deus que de forma natural não seria percebida. Quando jejuamos fazemos com que o nosso corpo entenda que somos governados não apenas por nossos sentidos corpóreos, e o subjugamos à nossa espiritualidade.

Quando estudamos a Bíblia, buscando não apenas conhecimento, mas de fato usando nossos sentidos e faculdades espirituais para que a Palavra de Deus se torne viva em nós; quando buscamos ouvi-lo falar conosco especificamente, para conhecê-lo e adorá-lo, Ele responde e sua palavra nos transforma, transforma o nosso entendimento e a nossa vida.

Quando buscamos a Deus, Ele se achega para nós. Quando invocamos o Espírito Santo e pedimos para que sua influência seja plena em nós, pedindo para que ele nos tome na prática do que Paulo ensina em Efésios 5, estamos começando algo tremendamente poderoso, ao qual nem os poderes do inferno podem resistir.
